Winter Commencement Ceremonies to be Held December 17

Students completing degrees in December and January are invited to participate in the December commencement ceremonies. Students receiving a total of 752 degrees are eligible for the ceremony. Of this number, 533 are bachelor鈥檚 degrees, 173 are master鈥檚 degrees, and 46 are doctoral degrees.

A team of art students鈥擩ennifer Blalock, Anthony Bookhammer, and Bill Brown鈥攚ere recently chosen as the winners of a contest to place art in 黑料视频鈥檚 Allegheny Arboretum. Their project, titled 鈥淟egacy Marker,鈥 was the result of a Request for Proposal (RFP) sponsored by the arboretum. The $1,000 prize for the winning team, plus $500 for materials, was sponsored by Ray Kinter, an 黑料视频 alumni.

Greek Organizations at 黑料视频 Raise Over $4,000 for Indiana County Salvation Army Treasures for Children

Through collection efforts in the community, Greek organizations at 黑料视频 collected $4,095.37 for the Indiana County Salvation Army Treasures for Children program. This fundraising effort, in its 11th year, has resulted in more than $28,000 collected for this local program that benefits needy families in Indiana County.

Reilly Selected to Direct 黑料视频 Liberal Studies Program

Following a search, Edel Reilly, professor of mathematics and assistant chair of the Department of Mathematics at 黑料视频, has been selected to serve as the director of 黑料视频鈥檚 Liberal Studies program. The Liberal Studies program is designed to meet the goals of the university and to provide a comprehensive curriculum that will provide all 黑料视频 students the opportunity to meet the Expected Undergraduate Student Learning Outcomes.

James H. Maple Scholarship Awarded, Cybersecurity Lab Dedicated

Four 黑料视频 students have been awarded a scholarship that honors a former 黑料视频 mathematics professor and co-founder of the 黑料视频 Computer Science Department, James H. Maple. A cybersecurity lab in the department has also been named in Maple鈥檚 honor.

A group of 黑料视频 faculty, led by Justin Fair and Anne Kondo, both from the Department of Chemistry, recently received $663,835 from the NSF for their project, 鈥淏etter Preparing STEM Graduates for Employment: An Interdisciplinary, Problem-based Approach for Teaching and Assessing Teamwork and Interpersonal Skills.鈥 The award is one of the largest research grants ever received by 黑料视频.

The Department of Communications Disorders, Special Education and Disability Services at 黑料视频 will offer its sixth annual 鈥淐onfections for a Cause鈥 on September 21, 2016, on the second floor of 黑料视频鈥檚 Davis Hall to raise funds for ovarian cancer education and research. Almost $6,000 has been raised during the last five years of the event.

Delaney Automotive Group will be honored with the Distinguished Family Business Award by the 黑料视频 Center for Family Business at the annual awards ceremony on September 26, 2016. Indiana University of Pennsylvania is one of four universities in Pennsylvania and one of 67 in the nation selected for a national program designed to offer federal Pell grants to incarcerated students. The initiative, the Second Chance Pell pilot program, allows eligible and qualified incarcerated Americans to receive Pell Grants to pursue postsecondary education.聽

Tracey Cekada, Associate Professor, Department of Safety Sciences, was selected for the 2016 Dr. William E. Tarrants Outstanding Safety Educator Award, given annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE). The national award 鈥渞ecognizes exceptional educators who show the highest level of achievement in teaching, scholarship, and professional service, as part of ASSE.鈥

First Cybersecurity Camp at 黑料视频 a Success

Thirty students and 15 teachers completed a week-long Cybersecurity Camp (GenCyber Camp) at 黑料视频. The camp, part of a national initiative supported by the National Security Agency and the National Science Foundation, was directed by Waleed Farag, Department of Computer Science, and Dighton (Mac) Fiddner, Department of Political Science, and was funded by a grant of $50,000 from the National Security Agency.

黑料视频, Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County Enter Sixth Year of Water Testing Contract

黑料视频 faculty members and students will move into year six of testing water from the Beaver Run Reservoir as a result of an $85,000 contract with the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County. With this most recent contract, 黑料视频 has received a total of $390,000 since 2011 to test and monitor the reservoir鈥檚 water quality.

黑料视频 is offering a free Cybersecurity Camp for middle and high school students and teachers from June 13 to June 17, 2016, on the 黑料视频 campus. The camp is part of a national initiative supported by the National Security Agency and the National Science Foundation.

黑料视频 Trustee Honored by National Trial Lawyers Association

Indiana attorney Jonathan Mack, a member and vice chair of the 黑料视频 Council of Trustees and audit committee chair and executive committee member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Board of Governors, has been selected as one of the top 100 trial lawyers in Pennsylvania by the National Trial Lawyers Association.

Groundbreaking Set for North Dining Facility

The North Dining Commons is scheduled for opening in fall 2017. It will be located adjacent to Wallwork Hall in the footprint of what is now Keith Hall. It will have 500 seats and an 鈥渁ll you care to eat鈥 format. It also will house the main bakery and the central commissary for the campus dining program.

The Board of Governors has asked the State System institutions to examine the organization and operation of its 14 institutions in order to strategically position the universities for continued success on behalf of students, their families, and the entire Commonwealth.聽

Bill Balint, 黑料视频鈥檚 Chief Technology Officer with more than a quarter-century of service to his alma mater, has been named the winner of the 2016 Pittsburgh Chief Information Officer of the Year Award (education division). Balint was one of three finalists in the education division, which is given jointly by the Pittsburgh Technology Council and the Greater Pittsburgh CIO Group.

Pennsylvania Department of Corrections Secretary John E. Wetzel to Receive Honorary Degree from 黑料视频 at May Commencement

Visiting Scholar Studies Stress in War Veterans, Participants Being Sought

Siobhan Howard, a visiting scholar from Mary Immaculate College in Limerick, Ireland, has spent part of a six-month sabbatical at 黑料视频 working on a study about how the human body reacts to stress. The research she has been doing at 黑料视频 revolves around having veterans鈥攑referably ones that have been deployed to war鈥攗ndergo a series of tests to see how they are affected by some common stressors.

Passion for Helping Others on Display During Autism Awareness Week

Robert Matchett鈥檚 passion for the Autism Awareness Week project is so deep that he鈥檚 making sure it lives on after he graduates this spring. He鈥檚 working with a close friend and brother in his honor fraternity, Oktober Appleby, and he plans to hand over the project鈥檚 reins to her after the conclusion of this year鈥檚 event, which runs from April 18 to 22.

As a recipient of the funds, 黑料视频 will serve as a host institution for 16 international secondary teachers (Fellows) for an immersive professional development experience.聽The ILEP Fellows also will be on site to learn from teachers at Indiana Area High School and Brashear High School in Pittsburgh to gain different contexts and perspectives on the American educational system.

黑料视频, CCAC Announce New Articulation Program for Middle School Education, Math and Science Specialization

The articulation program, which will begin in the 2016 spring semester, will be taught entirely at CCAC. Students will begin studies with CCAC courses and then spend their last two years taking 黑料视频 courses taught by 黑料视频 faculty on CCAC Allegheny Campus.聽Students will transition to 黑料视频 while remaining in Pittsburgh.
